 Excellent
 Good
 Satisfactory
 Non-compliant
 Justifiable Reason

Grade A or Excellent compliance means there is a very close correlation between submitted results and wet chemistry results (a z-score of less than 1). Grade B or Good compliance means there is close correlation with minor variations which can be fully explained (a z-score of 1-2). Grade C or Satisfactory compliance means that there is some correlation between submitted and wet chemistry results with some larger variations which require further investigation and potential corrective actions to improve. Grade F or Non-compliant status means that there is a large variation between results submitted and wet chemistry (a z-score of greater than 3).  Grade F can also reflect that no data was submitted by a member laboratory for that month’s Proficiency Test. Grade P is awarded if there is a Justifiable Reason why results have not been submitted by group members. Awarded at the discretion of the Group Technical Secretary, this occurs only in the event of an unforeseen circumstance such as equipment failure, damage to laboratory etc

Group Performance Report - Close of Season Summary

At the completion of the 2022-23 Proficiency Testing season, the collated data has been subject to a full Technical review by the Group. The season overall has shown positive agreement between the group members’ data, mainly from NIRS analysis and the reference chemistry results. This continues the trend from the recent seasons and provides the group members with confidence in their laboratory processes and forage analysis reports. For their customers, feed advisers and farmers, it shows that the forage analysis by group members is consistent and reliable and can be used with confidence in developing feed rations for ruminant livestock.

The third sample of maize silage produced overall grade results similar to that of the second sample with 87% of member laboratories achieving an overall A or B grade (53% A and 33%B).
Again some individual labs are looking into the reasons behind the C and F grades on DM and NDF.
Having now reached the end of the current Proficiency Testing (PT) scheme season, a full review of all data is underway and this will be discussed in detail by the Group members and used to amend and improve their analysis where necessary.
A summary will be posted before the next PT season begins in September 23.

The final whole crop sample of this season of the PT scheme continued the pattern from the earlier two samples, with a very good performance results on the key parameters of Dry Matter (DM), Starch, and fibre (NDF). The performance grading showed 93% of A (60%) and B grades (33%) - the same split as achieved on two previous whole crop rounds.

This demonstrates a real consistency of approach and process in the analysis of these samples by all labs in the FAA group to produce useful and reliable forage analysis for clients. All analysis results will form part of an end of season review to consider performance and any changes technical changes required.

87% of Group members achieved an overall A or B grade in this round - 47% A and 40% B. There were two C grades and no Fail grades (F) or non-submissions.

Individual labs had some issues on DM and Starch analyses and are investigating the technical reasons behind these results.

Overall results show good consistency of analysis with some areas which require improvement. Maize can be a difficult forage material to analyse due to its naturally variable nature.

Within DM there were more grades of B than A grade than in the December sample - this is most likely due to a wide range of dry matter within the samples analysed.

Overall users of member laboratory analysis results can feel confident in the data supplied on their forage analysis reports.

At the end of the season, results from the three grass samples will be collated and reviewed by the FAA Technical Group.

For the second whole crop sample of the PT season, the member laboratories achieved a total of 60% A grade and 33% B grade. This matches the grades achieved for the first whole crop sample, demonstrating the consistency of analysis across the season, as well as within this sample set.

One laboratory did not contribute data for the PT scheme this month which equates to an F grade.

The second grass sample of the PT scheme produced a set of very good performance results. 93% of participating laboratories achieved an overall A grade and the remainder was B grade. All laboratories contributed data for this sample. Within the individual Dry Matter (DM) Crude Protein (CP) and fibre (NDF) categories, A grades were over 73%, B grades at a maximum of 20% and there was one C grade (7%).

This performance demonstrates the accuracy of the results from the Group members across a range of samples and provides confidence in the results being reported to customers on forage analysis reports

Analysis results for the first maize sample of the year showed that 80% of member laboratories achieved either an overall A grade (47%) or a B grade (33%). The mix of A and B grades across the Dry Matter, Starch and NDF fibre analyses was similar. The results show a good consistency of analysis on a forage material that is naturally not homogenous in texture.
One lab was unable to contribute data due to a technical reason and was P grade and two others did not submit data for this round.

The October test was for whole crop silage. The group performance shows that 60% of laboratories achieved an A grade, 33% B grade and one did not take part in the round. Overall this supports confidence to users of analysis across the industry in that the results across the members laboratories are consistent on the same sample set.

The new proficiency Testing scheme season started with grass samples in September. One lab did not submit results and the remaining labs were graded either A or B grade on overall performance. A good start to the new season with some options for fine tuning on individual graded parameters.
